This paper was presented at Vocational education at a distance: the Asia and the Pacific region workshop (TD/IRD 88.96). Vocational education, particularly in science, engineering, management and technology has been a major commitment of US universities since the late 1950s and early 1960s. US universities pioneered the use of video tape and later satellite television broadcasts. Television in one or both of these forms has been the major technology used for distance education in the US although computer-based and, more recently, Internet-based courses are becoming increasingly important. This paper highlights the development of television based vocational and distance education and describes the National Technological University as a case study.
