This publication reports on a project that was undertaken by the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Disabilities Services Section, Disabilities and Learning Difficulties Unit of the NSW Department of Education and Training and aimed to investigate the barriers to and the opportunities for the further participation in New Apprenticeships of students with disabilities. The research methods were a review of the relevant literature and analysis of enrolment data, a focus group, a survey of students with disabilities enrolled during 1997 in TAFE NSW in apprenticeship and traineeship courses, and consultations with employers of students with disabilities. The national training context is looked at, and access and equity issues examined. The current position of students with disabilities with regard to education, training and employment is reviewed, and assistance and support mechanisms are described.
