Women with disabilities and TAFE project report

This report was prepared for the Vocational Education, Employment and Training Advisory Committee (VEETAC) Women's Standing Committee for consideration for national funding for strategies on the issues of women with disabilities in TAFE. The Women with Disabilities and TAFE project was an initiative of the National Plan of Action for Women in TAFE and was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training. A pilot consultation was undertaken in South Australia in conjunction with a review of Australian and international literature regarding women, disabilities and vocational training, as a guide to determine directions for a project proposal. Although the study was undertaken in SA, it was hoped that it would have a national application. The consultation identified a range of issues affecting education and training for women and disabilities. The more significant ones are: (a) data collections mechanisms are inadequate and/or client insensitive; (b) inadequate support services and specialised equipment; (c) the need for suitable professional development for TAFE staff in relation to women with disabilities; (d) the need for income support to enable participation in TAFE; and (e) lack of targeted, clear and accessible information for present and potential students on the services and options for education, employment and training. As a result of the findings, two projects under the national plan have been proposed: (1) statistics on disability (joint project); and (2) promoting TAFE to women with disabilities.

Women and TAFE: a national plan of action

Commonwealth, state and territory governments are committed to improving the education and training opportunities for Australian women. Ministers responsible for TAFE support a comprehensive and nationally coordinated approach to implementing their governments' commitment. This publication forms the framework for the national approach. It takes account of major trends of social, industrial and economic change currently taking place, and predicted changes. The main objectives are to improve: paths of entry to TAFE; women's participation in vocational education; the TAFE environment for women; support services for women; training of women as part of award restructuring; participation of women in TAFE decision making.
