The report focuses, in the main, on the experiences of training undertaken by the third cohort of the Youth Cohort Study (YCS) of England and Wales. This group were first in a position to leave school, if they wished, in the summer of 1986. It provides a description of the incidence of training amongst 16-19 year olds in the late eighties. It also provides some parallel evidence on the fourth YCS cohort who were in a position to leave in the summer of 1988, comparing those instances where the two groups' experiences differed substantially.
