The Technical and Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI) aims to influence state education in ways to prepare 14-18 year olds better for working life. The Initiative was introduced by the Department of Employment in 1983 as a small-scale pilot scheme and extended nationally in 1987. As a catalyst for curriculum change, the TVEI is not intended to be a permanent programme. Under present plans it will end 1997-98.
