Don Bosco, the founder of the Salesian Society, an order of the Roman Catholic Church, made it his mission to know and help the children whom he saw fending for themselves on the streets of Italian cities. Instead of confining his assistance to charity, he set up shops and vocational schools to teach them manual skills and the elements of wholesome life. His idea was to provide them with means for earning a living and becoming responsible, productive adult citizens.
