The programme described in this paper consists of several projects and aims at establishing norms and criteria for natural forest management in ‘Mata Atlantica’ (Atlantic Forest). However, the norms also apply to other types of tropical vegetation in order to ensure continuous economic exploitation of forest resources, maintain their genetic patrimony and, above all, respect the delicate ecological balance. Emphasis is put on education and training programmes for workers and technicians involved in forestry work in order to ensure maximum safety in forest management.
