National industry skills forums provide a mechanism for Australia's employment and business leaders to meet with vocational education and training (VET) decision makers to discuss the workforce skills base needed for internationally competitive companies and enterprises. The inaugural forum was held in September 2003 followed by a second forum in April 2004. This paper from the second forum is the opening address by David Hind, ANTA Board Chair. It considers the current state of VET in Australia, future challenges, and the importance of partnerships between industry, government, and training providers. It also highlights the role of VET in meeting the needs of individuals, communities, and Indigenous people.
