Between 1994 and 1998 the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) was conducted in twenty OECD countries to ascertain the levels of literacy of people aged between 15 and 74. Participants undertook tasks in prose, document and quantitative literacy (that is, understanding and using information, finding information and using mathematics for problem solving). This resource of four information booklets provides a summary of the findings of the survey and further analysis of the material with additional comparative data. Each booklet has a different focus. 'Adult literacy in Australia' looks at how Australia compares to other countries who took part in the survey. 'Developing the literacy skills of Australians' looks at how literacy skills are developed, both initially and later in life. 'Literacy skills and the Australian workplace' discusses the relationship between employment, unemployment and literacy skills and participation in training. 'Health, welfare and the literacy skills of adult Australians' looks at the impact of literacy levels on other indicators of social and community well being such as income levels and chronic health problems. Each booklet includes graphic representations of the data and references to further reading relating to the IALS survey.
