This book, developed with the assistance of an Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) Innovative Projects grant, offers a model for analysing and developing teaching ideas for incorporating authentic texts into adult and youth literacy classes. The introduction explains the approach taken in the simple analysis provided and offers an example of a teaching sequence which uses one of the texts from the resource, and a number of the suggested teaching idea to develop a unit of work suitable for a lower level group. The resource then provides more than 30 further examples of authentic texts ranging from a take away menu, a magazine feature, a web page and a legal document, which have all been similarly analysed and for which a range of teaching ideas are offered. The main aim of the resource is to encourage teachers to find their own authentic material and use the model provided to prepare their own analysis and lesson sequences.
