Increasing participation: a toolkit for adult learning providers

This kit, developed by Adult Learning Australia (ALA), is a resource for adult education providers. It is designed to encourage them to identify the main barriers to participation in lifelong learning and to assist them to develop strategies to overcome these barriers. It uses a learning circle approach to encourage staff to undertake activities, share knowledge, and to generate ideas suitable for their particular context. The kit is divided into 6 sections. A series of worksheets is followed by a selection of readings which cover a diverse range of topics including culture and learning, dealing with negative attitudes to learning, marketing, multiple intelligence and some statistics around participation and gender. This section is followed by activities which include some useful action research projects which look at evaluating the effectiveness of existing promotional campaigns, and encouraging centres to step outside the comfort zone. The final sections of the resource offer planning templates and a list of useful resources. This resource is likely to be useful to all adult learning organisations seeking to explore how they can expand their delivery to different sectors of the community.
