'Everything - we just need to learn about everything': Vietnamese Australian women's language and literacy learning in a vocational context

During employment preparation training that the Australian National Committee on Refugee Women Co-operative (ANCORW) provided for a group of Vietnamese women at the request of a local community group, it was noted that the learners were very willing to support and mentor other women in their learning. This project aimed (during another employment preparation course) to: - observe these learning relationships between students, - observe the problem solving strategies used as learning strategies, and - map students' work experience in terms of their language and literacy. Data were also gathered via videotape in the classroom, audiotape of interviews with students and teachers, teachers' class materials and feedback, student diaries and evaluation forms, and outcomes of focus groups. This report includes: - case studies of 8 learners - discussion of the background to the project in terms of cultural issues, social identity of language learners, and language learning theories, for example - socioeconomic profile of learners - focus group outcomes - a number of findings and recommendations regarding effective strategies, delivery modes and program funding and administration.
