SWL student destination survey 2004

This paper reports on the destinations in 2004 of school leavers who had participated in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) as part of a VET in Schools course in Years 11 or 12, and left school in 2003. SWL provides opportunities for senior secondary school students to experience the workplace, enabling them to make informed decisions about their transition from school to work or further education. The 2004 SWL Student Destination Survey, conducted over April/May 2004, had over 15,500 responses. The study found that there was a high level of satisfaction with SWL among participants and a strong indication that SWL placements played a very positive role in informing career choice. The majority of respondents stated that the SWL placement helped them: to acquire confidence, knowledge and skills relevant to workplaces; and to decide the kind of job they wanted when they left school. Young people engaged in further study were specifically asked whether they found their work placement(s) helpful in choosing their area of study. An overwhelming majority reported that their work placement did help. A very small proportion reported that the work placement did not help them choose their area of study. These results were consistent with previous years.
