This career education elective has been developed for pre-service secondary school teachers. The elective responds to calls from business, federal and state government for increased preparation of young people for career through enhancement of life, work and education access and opportunities. It provides a theoretical background to career education for Australian schools and prepares pre-service teachers to be able to stimulate their secondary school students to inquire about, consider and understand the complex nature of the world of work and the multiple career options which may be available to them through further education, training and employment. In the context of this elective career education refers to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences which assists students to make informed decisions about study and/or work options and enable effective participation in working life.
