Issues and suggestions for assessment of practical placements

This paper identifies some of the issues that students and teachers are confronting in the assessment of practical placements in industry. Drawing on their experience in child care and veterinary nursing, the authors highlight areas of concern with assessing in the workplace and offer some solutions and guidance for improving the outcomes of industry placement. Issues covered include determining student competence, the role of the workplace supervisor and the teacher in assessment, teacher/student conflict, workplace supervisor/student conflict, student placement, industry support and expectations, student monitoring and record keeping and exploitation of students by employers.
