The author discusses in detail an innovative extension to the existing, graded assessment approach in the Diploma of Applied Arts in Fashion. Concerned with determining student performance in Design projects, teaching staff are using a panel or jury marking system which includes representatives drawn from relevant sections of the fashion industry. Assessment panels are seen as having the dual advantages of eliminating the impact of possible teacher subjectivity whilst providing enhanced credibility in the eyes of students and potential employers.
