How do you know if they’ve understood?: the assessment problems experienced by teachers of non-English speaking background students in a mainstream program

After discussing with computing teachers at the Canberra Institute of Technology the problems that their NESB students have with assessment, reading the relevant literature and examining examples of assessments used in 1994, the authors have provided guidelines for the computing teachers when developing assessments. These guidelines would be of benefit to teachers from other areas. The authors have also given a set of recommendations proposing that both the NESB students and the computing teachers receive support. This support could be of various sorts, either within and/or outside the computing course, and goes further than language level, although for some students an inadequate level of English is a real issue.
