This paper summarises the findings of two projects: an investigation into the choice of texts made by ESL teachers at the Canberra Institute of Technology to assess reading and listening skills at the intermediate level of 2 on the Australian Second Language Proficiency Ratings scale, and an investigation into the tasks used to test reading skills in the Australian Assessment of Communicative English Skills (access).
