Becoming more critical: the future of literacy education in Australia

In the recent Christie Report of 1991 the writers considered that 'critical social literacy' is the cornerstone of effective future English teaching. They maintained that all other contrasting present and past approaches to literacy learning were wrong. In this paper the author examines the assumptions, claims and weight of the report's general case as a starting point for considering key issues confronting the future of effective English teaching and learning.
