The author discusses similarities in trends regarding national curricula in Australian and British secondary schools. Opposition to and support for a compulsory national curriculum come from different quarters. In Britain, conservatives promote the National Curriculum and progressives oppose it. The reverse applies in Australia. The author concludes that policy makers must ensure that the needs of children are paramount. Educational systems must not be allowed to get in the way of learning.
