Vocational education and training

The author provides an overview of vocational education and training (VET) in Europe and suggests some parallels with VET in Australia. These are related to the lack of public awareness of VET, the current size and achievements of VET, and its potential for economic, personal and social development in the knowledge society. The relevance of VET to modern conditions is compared to that of general education which, the author argues, is still predominantly based on nineteenth-century values.
