A research report on an examination of target market attitudes toward proposed changes to the vocational education and training system in Australia and the Modern Apprenticeship and Traineeship System (MAATS)

This project was undertaken to satisfy the following major information needs: (1) to explore thoroughly the attitudes of relevant stakeholders toward the current system and operation of vocational education and training (VET) within various parts of Australia; (2) to understand current levels of perception and knowledge of the nature of training and to what it refers or does include; (3) to determine to what extent the terminology surrounding vocational education and training is recognised and understood; (4) to examine the levels of recognition and knowledge of the terms 'apprenticeship' and 'traineeship' as well as the extent to which these are understood valued; (5) to gauge the various beliefs in the community about who should fund off-job training; (6) to assess all relevant attitudes and reactions to the concept of the Modern Apprenticeship and Traineeship System (MAATS) and to evaluate the extent to which that concept is viewed as practical and desirable and appropriate; (7) to probe responses toward the meaning and suitability of the term 'MAATS' and the slogan 'Training for tomorrow'; and (8) to provide a set of strategic recommendations to guide implementation, naming and communication of the proposed changes to relevant parties.
