Abstract:

Reported in this article are the findings from a survey of a group of New South Wales TAFE vocational teachers of their experiences with competency-base training. Results indicate that there is a variety of problems, involving perceived pressures to pass students, provision of resources, use of modularisation and assessment and standards.

There is mounting evidence that the new competency paradigm has serious inherent weaknesses which hinder effective practical implementation. The limits of this study are acknowledged and the need for further large-scale studies is stressed.
