Abstract:
This book attempts to highlight the scale of the problem of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment in industrial societies. The problem is examined from a variety of perspectives and draws upon development in other countries, including those of the Third World. Examples are taken from France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, Cuba and other small island communities. It demonstrates the underlying causes of youth unemployment and offers some positive solutions, in particulr the need to reappraise many current educational practices. The contents are as follows: Introduction: youth, education and employment: the challenge of the 80s / Keith Watson; Youth, education and employment: a European overview / Dennis Kallen; The challenge of employment: a British perspective / Andrew Forrest; Trends and structural changes in English vocational education / Michael Farley; Education and employment in western Europe: the German case / Wolfgang Mitter; Transition from school to work for 16-18 year olds in Sweden and Denmark / Leon Boucher; Preparation for the transition from school to work in socialist Cuba / Mark Richmond; Education, environment and economy in small Commonwealth countries / Colin Brock; Hereford and Worcester Education and Industry Centre: a comparison with overseas initiatives / Terry Martin and Michael Webb; Alternative structures: the way ahead / Edmund King; Short bibliography on youth, education and employment opportunities.
