Abstract:
There is no single way to integrate on and off-the-job training and assessment that suits all situations, given the complexity and diversity of integrated workplace learning programs. The imperative is to ensure that any framework for this integration is based on educationally sound principles which promotes training and assessment that is as relevant as possible to the requirements of the workplace and to the vocational needs of the learner.
This conclusion reflects the outcomes of a lengthy research project conducted by the Vocational Education and Assessment Centre (VEAC), investigating the effectiveness and practicality of integrating on and off-the-job training and assessment. The research was carried out via six case studies in a variety of industries, enterprise sizes and vocational program areas.
Via illustration of these case studies, this paper discusses the features that need to be established for the benefits of this form of delivery to be fully realised by both provider and enterprise.
