In this article, extracted from his book Getting to grips with quality (TD/TNC 28.02), Bill Hall discusses the meaning and importance of quality, whether of goods or services. As customers increasingly demand high quality, organisations are recognising the need for changes to attitude throughout the organisation, changes to organisational structures and changes to organisational operation, including increased responsibility for quality.

The article gives examples of organisational changes that may be made to improve the quality of the product, and discusses the application of key principles of quality management to TAFE courses. The industry restructuring which is taking place in Australia is discussed as a way of applying the quality principles described.
