Abstract:

This article presents an interview with Richard Boyatzis, who has played a major role in management competencies. He discusses the history of the competency movement and outlines his methodology for competency improvement and development. Richard Boyatzis has been involved in competency assessment and research since the 1970s and discusses his career and research development during that time. The interview focuses on his work concerning the development of a comprehensive competency dictionary for all occupations. He emphasises that processes should be implemented that encourage people to think about what they want out of life, their ideals and their dreams and to consider whether or not they are working towards them. He also discusses his long-term aim to develop a model that encourages people to become increasingly involved with their learning and development path and encourage them to assess themselves.
