Author: Althaus, Marco

Abstract:

This article seeks to provide, for a European reader, the context in which for-profit higher education has grown in the US, lay out how commercialism and pedagogy fit together in practice, analyze its academic identity in a business concept, and discuss the controversies and contributions of the for-profit sector. It is suggested that understanding the US for-profit model has relevance for the European debate. Its methods can inform current European reforms on how to work with non-traditional students, the social equity of access to higher education, changing demographics and lifelong learning, and the merits and practices of a growing educational service industry.
