Abstract:

It is evident throughout the world, particularly in the current recession, that National Governments are increasingly concerned at the relationship between the level of investment in tertiary education and its returns in economic success.

The purpose of this paper is to review the current Tertiary Education System in the United Kingdom by taking a holistic view of it in light of these changes, where boundaries between segments are becoming increasingly blurred and a new window of opportunity has emerged to fully integrate the segments. The evolving vertically integrated Tertiary University Model is presented as an additional new United Kingdom structure to effectively and efficiently produce a mass highly skilled workforce. It builds on the experience of other countries in producing integrated models particularly for increasing access and social equality.
