The changing face of southern African society and the future of VET

This paper examines the trends in vocational education and training (VET) in the two most important countries in the region, and arguably, the whole continent: South Africa and Botswana. The paper reflects on some of the most recent research and focuses on the problems that are facing the two countries. A brief history of VET in the region and a brief literature survey is provided. The structure and enrolment in VET in South Africa is looked at, attempts at standardisation are described and lack of public funding through local and regional government instrumentalities is described as an ongoing problem. Botswana has a similar VET system to South Africa with similar problems. The author points out that the southern Africa region is rich in natural resources but has a distinct lack of technical skills.
