Abstract:

The mental health sector is experiencing a strong growth in demand and a realignment of policy. At the same time, shortages are being experienced across a range of occupations. As new forms of service emerge, policy makers, professional bodies and the institutions of education and training must rethink traditional boundaries and pathways into and through the sector. The mental health articulation research project led by the Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council (CS&H ISC) investigated strategies to expand skills through articulation between the vocational education and training (VET) and higher education sectors. This report is one of four and presents the findings of research conducted by the Workplace Research Centre (WRC), University of Sydney primarily aimed at answering the question: What can be done to improve workforce development in the community mental health sector to meet demands for qualified/skilled labour?
