Abstract:
Eight National Metal and Engineering Curriculum (NMEC) modules were introduced into Certificate of Trade Studies Courses in Western Australian TAFE in 1991. Prior to the 1992 teaching year, industry selected the remaining 16 modules to complete the Trade Studies course. Industry selection of technical modules that satisfy enterprise or industry skill requirements is central to the National Metals modular course format. This report provides an insight into industry training outcomes required from the NMEC modules for trade level off-the-job training. Data was collected at industry forums attended by representatives from industry, private enterprises and government agencies. The report concluded that it will not be possible to cater for the modular training needs of industry using the traditional trade training approach. TAFE and other providers must look closely at their administrative and delivery structures if they are to satisfy the demands of industry.
