Abstract:

An emerging employment system characterised by:

(1) a high degree of employment security based on flexible job assignment,

(2) employee involvement in problem solving and continuous improvement, and

(3) continuous training of all employees is described.

This paper examines the system through case studies of 5 USA firms, addresses issues and looks at prospects for its wider adoption.
