Abstract:
Since 2003 the Victorian Quailfications Authority (VQA) has been working on the development of a credit-based system called the credit matrix, which is a common approach to describing learning offered in the senior secondary, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education sectors. The credit matrix works by describing units (the smallest certifiable component of a qualification) in terms of level, to describe complexity of learning, and points, to describe volume of learning. By providing a common means to describe learning, regardless of where it is delivered, the credit matrix aims to make it easier to compare different types of learning, and to make the qualifications system easier to understand. This presentation outlines what the credit matrix is, and the work undertaken to put it into action. It explores how the credit matrix may be used as a tool to help learners navigate the education and training system.
