Abstract:

Competency-based standards have a number of uses for professions. The development of these standards in the TAFE teaching profession could provide invaluable information to improve TAFE teacher training, and could be used to recognise the skills developed both formally and informally by teachers during their career. This paper suggests how competency-based standards can be used to improve training for TAFE teachers by maximising skill acquisition in the training program. It will focus on that component of the training program designed to increase teaching related skills.

There are a number of unique features of TAFE teachers in training. Competency-based standards provide information which, coupled with these unique features can be used to increase the competency levels of all TAFE teachers undertaking training and the effectiveness of the training program.
