Abstract:

To provide unemployed youth with the education and practical skills which would equip them for positions in the workforce, the clerical and retail areas were used as the reference industries. These skills are also appropriate for a number of other industries, e.g. travel, advertising, hospitality, computer industries etc. the program developed personal and social skills as well as job skills during the ongoing 40 week period. Trainees were able to join the course during the 40 week program as vacancies occured. Trainees benefited from mastering the practical skills, which in turn boosted their confidence and enabled them to become suitable interviewees for jobs. The course is designed in block form to enable students to enter the course at different times. Trainees obtained positions in the following occupations: sales; clerical, public service; travel; advertising; hospitality; computers; telephonist; receptionist; food preparation and service; health services.
