Abstract:

The [Australian Capital Territory] ACT government has a strong commitment to vocational education and training (VET) as a means of providing appropriately skilled and qualified citizens to contribute to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the ACT.

The ACT Annual Vocational Education and Training Priorities 2009 has been prepared to assist stakeholders, particularly training providers, to build awareness of: factors affecting VET and workforce development in the ACT; sources of information about demand for VET; and the ACT Government's VET priorities for 2009.

The document provides: an indication of the industrial, economic and political factors and trends that may affect demand for VET in the ACT; an overview of VET and its interaction with priorities set by government; an overview of skills shortages, including an indicative list of those affecting the ACT, which are relevant to the VET sector; and a set of priorities that will guide the government funding of vocational education.

This document has been prepared to determine a list of priorities for VET in 2009 by: drawing together a range of existing information such as economic and demographic analysis, VET research and reports and government polices; reviewing national industry advice published by Industry Skills Councils; contracting specific local industry advice from a consortium of ACT and region Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs); and gathering information and intelligence through facilitation of and participation in a range of consultation forums, workshops, committees and working groups at national and local levels.
