Abstract:
This second edition (the first is indexed at TD/APSDIN 50.07) updates and extends the description of initial and continuing vocational education and training (VET) in Italy. It provides a description of the general reference context for the Italian VET system and its qualitative and quantitative development. The report begins with a description of the administrative, demographic and economic background within which the training system operates. A brief historical outline of the development of the system is followed by a detailed description of arrangements for initial and continuing vocational training and the supportive legislative and financial framework. Vocational training in Italy is the responsibility of regional authorities whereas education is managed by the central government. Information is provided on the vocational training system managed by the regions as well as the vocational education system administered by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Universities and Scientific and Technological Research. The following sections address the funding of VET and the qualitative aspects of the system such as certification and qualifications, the training of teachers and trainers, and vocational guidance. The final section examines the innovative aspects of the Italian system in relation to areas such as the integration of school and training systems and the working world, higher technical vocational training, apprenticeships, training and guidance placements, the development of the certification system, and the accreditation of training bodies.
