Educational research and evaluation: the World Bank's role

This paper is one of a series on international education research which examines the work of international organisations involved in educational research. The aim of these papers is to highlight the programs and policies of these organisations and draw out common issues arising across nations. This paper provides an overview of the World Bank's involvement in educational research as consumers, facilitators and producers of such information. The author provides examples of original research, economic and sector work, and policy work, and outlines some future directions for the Bank's role in educational research and evaluation. The Bank aims to reduce its role in producing research and focus more attention on facilitating research and evaluation. It will establish the International Programme for the Improvement of Educational Outcomes and the Education Knowledge Management System, to identify research needs and support relevant research programs. Its role as a consumer of educational research will grow through a new Human Development Network and expansion of the Economic Development Institute (EDI).
