Abstract:
In 1998, the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) sought to explore the impact of Australian educational research, particularly in relation to schools. This document reports on the five studies undertaken to achieve that aim. Each takes a different perspective on the impact of educational research in Australia and their publication in one document provides a study of the nature, breadth, quality, responsiveness, and influence of Australian educational research. The document begins with an overview which explains the background to the project, and then synthesises the key findings in each of the studies, and discusses their implications for policy and research in the future. The five studies are: Mapping educational research and its impact on Australian schools / Allyson Holbrook, John Ainley, Sid Bourke, John Owen, Phillip McKenzie, Sebastian Misson and Trevor Johnson; Backtracking practice and policies to research / Jane Figgis, Ann Zubrick, Anne Butorac and Anna Alderson; Teacher knowledge in action / Marilyn McMeniman, Joy Cumming, Jan Wilson, John Stevenson and Cheryl Sim; The relationships between research and decision-making in education: an empirical investigation / Chris Selby Smith; Educational research in Australia: a bibliometric analysis / T. J. Phelan, D. S. Anderson, P. Bourke.
