Abstract:
The author traces trends in European education and vocational training policy from the Treaty of Rome to the present day. By examining community action in the light of political, social and economic trends, the author stresses a move towards the construction of a more coherent European area in which national traits continue to prevail. The author draws attention to a number of time lags and divergences in European policy with regard to national trends and also draws attention to increasing stress on economic considerations following the White paper on Growth, competitiveness and employment.
