Abstract:

Changes in the international business environment and technological changes in communications and transport have led to significant changes in the industrial policies of most OECD countries.

This paper examines the changes in OECD economies and the forces driving the shifts. By placing less emphasis on assisting specific industry sectors and more on creating business environments conducive to growth and investment, OECD economies are developing programs and initiatives targeting specific areas of market failure, removing impediments to growth and thereby encouraging competitiveness.

This paper examines broad trends in the implementation of policies and initiatives in OECD countries, and attempts to evaluate how changes in Australia's industry policies compare overall with such trends.
