Abstract:

This paper describes six trends in the development of senior vocational schools (SVS) and junior colleges (JC) curriculum standards. They are: (1) aiming to incorporate job training with advanced further study; (2) a tendency toward despecialisation; (3) an increase in academic coursework; (4) reliance on new technology to modernise subject matter; (5) an emphasis on feedback mechanisms for curriculum development; and (6) promotion of school-based curriculum development. Four suggestions for new directions for technological and vocational education (TVE) are made. They are: (1) more cooperation among TVE users and providers; (2) more integration with TVE subfields and articulation among TVE levels; (3) more experiential learning and flexibility in curriculum structure; and (4) development of skill standards and an assessment process to lead and demonstrate curricular quality and accountability.
