Author: Ashton, David Norman
Abstract:
This paper is taken from the plenary session on Wednesday 24 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. This paper reports on research conducted in the United Kingdom for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, into the use of electronic learning in training. The author suggests that e-learning has not delivered the training developments that were initially forecasted. Survey results indicate that less than one third of respondents utilise e-learning in the provision of training, and that e-learning is restricted to specific learning groups and activities. The author examines the effectiveness of e-learning processes. E-learning is useful in dissemination of hard knowledge and skills, but is less likely to be effective in transmitting tacit knowledge and as a replacement for informal workplace learning.
The proceedings for Monday 22 July are indexed at TD/TNC 78.331; the proceedings for Tuesday 23 July are indexed at TD/TNC 78.332; and the proceedings for Wednesday 24 July are indexed at TD/TNC 78.333.
