Abstract:

'Training & employment' is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. This article provides an analysis of the way training providers describe their areas of competence and activities. There are three main rationales governing the training market: (1) public-driven training supply; (2) certification-driven training supply; and (3) content-driven training supply. The public-driven supply covers training for employment seekers with public funding and company-funded training for employees and is active in the community, public and private sectors. Certification-driven training supply allows trainees to prepare for a diploma, title, an occupational qualification certificate or an authorisation or certification specific to certain regulated professions. It is active in the public, community, private and enterprise sectors. Content-driven training supply comprises 56% of the continuing training supply. It is aimed at adapting workers to technical changes, technological developments and transformation of work organisation and covers the private, enterprise, community and public sectors.
