Abstract:

The importance of vocational education and training (VET) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is significant and goes beyond individual outcomes. It is suggested that education is a key factor in empowering Indigenous people and breaking entrenched cycles of disadvantage. This publication provides summary information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who studied in Australia’s public vocational education and training sector in 2000. Growth patterns and trends in Indigenous participation are briefly discussed, as well as student characteristics, training activity, qualifications, annual hours spent on VET, outcomes of education and a brief section on apprenticeships and traineeships.
