Abstract:

As the largest providers and funders of training of individuals once they have left the full-time educational track (from school to college or university), employers have a major role in lifetime learning. Employers are also important as motivators of individuals to train (through direct encouragement and advice and through incentives such as career opportunities, pay and job satisfaction).

This study, based on a survey of 582 employing organisations and case studies of a further 59 organisations, aimed to increase our understanding of employers' role in lifetime learning and of the factors which shape employers' policies affecting lifetime learning.
