Abstract:

Lifelong learning is an indispensable idea which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation (UNESCO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Union (EU) promote as the key to prosperity and democracy in the 21st century. It is at the heart of current debates about the learning society, sustainable international development and world peace. The essays in this book explore the promise and limitations of current models of lifelong learning, demonstrating that learning is inseparable from morality and freedom. The author advocates new forms of teaching, learning and creativity in order to secure the renewal of communities, the democratisation of employment and strategies to combat inequality and social exclusion on a global scale. The chapters are entitled: The sociology of lifelong learning; Knowledge, power and ignorance; Knowing, understanding and feeling; Lifeworlds and learning; Contexts; Class, culture and adult education; Education and community regeneration; Institutions and power: the archaeology of educational organisations; Experience; Learning and creativity; Moral learning in the moral maze; Personal change in adulthood; Dialogue and learning: towards a new model of citizenship.
