Abstract:

This article is based on a research project undertaken by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research to investigate why some students who have completed an enabling course remain at the same qualification or re-enrol in the same enabling course in following years. The project was a follow-up study from NCVER's report 'Outcomes from enabling courses' (indexed at TD/TNC 65.99) which indicated that one in 12 graduates re-enrolled in the same enabling course in following years. The study found that there were both direct and indirect benefits for students re-enrolling in enabling courses. These included increased self-esteem and skills, maintenance of skills and employment while seeking work, and maintenance of supportive networks through TAFE contacts.

The report from this project, 'Moving on from enabling courses: why do some students remain in enabling courses' by Susan Dawe is indexed at TD/TNC 76.13; the conference paper, 'Enabling learners: diverse outcomes' by Susan Dawe is indexed at TD/TNC 78.531.
