Apprenticeship and Traineeship Taskforce report: meeting the employment based training needs of Western Australia

Abstract:

This report was established to provide advice to increase the takeup of apprenticeships and traineeships. The contents are: National comparisons; Western Australian (WA) industry demand for apprenticeships and traineeships; Issues impacting on the takeup of apprenticeship and traineeships. The following recommendations were made: (1) that the apprenticeship system is modernised and the Industrial Training Act is updated; (2) that the apprenticeship and traineeship system is simplified; (3) that the benefits of a well-trained workforce are promoted to employers; (4) that the image of apprenticeships and traineeships is improved; (5) that traineeships are expanded in a managed way; (6) that quality school based traineeships are expanded; (7) that an increased participation of specific groups in apprenticeships and traineeships is sought and encouraged; (8) that Government agencies increase the takeup of apprenticeships and traineeships; (9) that key stakeholders commit themselves to the highest levels of quality and performance in the State's apprenticeship and traineeship system; and (10) that the range of issues affecting the employment of mature age apprentices and trainees are examined and addressed.
